Although behavior problems are a common reason owners cite for surrendering their dog to a shelter, and many shelters do implement a treatment program to resolve or minimize a dog’s behavioral problems, there has been little formal research to examine the effectiveness of various programs and the role that stress and personality may play on a program’s effectiveness. The Center plans an extensive research program in this area to help shelters understand the effectiveness of treatment options and when to deploy them. Our first area to investigate is resource guarding, including food/treat aggression.
