Shaping The Future Conference

The Center for Shelter Dogs at the Animal Rescue League of Boston hosted a groundbreaking international conference dedicated to shelter dog behavior evaluations.

Shaping the Future: A Conversation About Canine Behavior Evaluations
was held on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 in Boston, MA. This one-day conference gathered behavior evaluation experts from around the world to discuss everything from the history of behavior evaluations, the challenges of behavior evaluations facing shelters today, and the path to the future of canine behavior evaluations for shelter dogs.

Attendees learned about the latest trends in canine behavior evaluations through presentations from renowned behavior evaluation experts as well as interaction with other attendees. Speakers will provide a global perspective on a wide range of issues including:

·         The history of canine behavior evaluations

·         The science behind evaluations

·         Challenges facing shelters in developing, validating, interpreting
    applying behavior evaluations today

·         How people use evaluations differently

·         What happens when people modify existing behavior evaluations

·         The future of canine behavior evaluations: synthesizing perspectives
    for the road ahead

Who Should Attend?

Those who are heavily involved in conducting behavior evaluations or developing behavior evaluations are encouraged to attend. Whether you’re an experienced behaviorist, researcher, or shelter staff member who frequently conducts canine behavior evaluations, this conference will give a high level view about state of the art behavior evaluations.

Those who do not have experience with canine behavior evaluations may also attend, but please note that this conference is an interactive conversation about canine behavior evaluations (past, present, and future) and it is not a conference that will teach attendees how to conduct or use a particular assessment.

Anouck Haverbeke, DVM,PhD

Dr. Anouck Haverbeke qualified as a DVM from Ghent University (Belgium) in 2001, defending a thesis about the welfare of horses. Subsequently she obtained a PhD in Ethology in 2009 at the University of Namur (Belgium). Her PhD research improved the security, efficiency and welfare among the working dogs and their handlers at the Belgian Defence. This project has been perceived as the groundwork of forthcoming research, identifying significant improvements in the way working dogs should be raised and/or procured, trained and employed - not to mention their welfare and the human animal relationship. Since 2009, Anouck has directed a veterinary behavioural practice, VetEthology. She conducts ongoing research on Ethology and Human Animal Interactions with collaboration of the University of Namur. Furthermore, she is member of Veterinary Associations on Ethology (VDWE, ESVCE).

Session Topic - European Perspective On Behavior Evaluations

Canine behavior evaluations are used in other nations where there may be differences in cultural attitudes towards dogs and how they live in our communities, as well as differences in the shelter systems that care for unwanted pets.  The European Union has been at the forefront of canine ethology and developing canine behavior evaluations, and much of the published literature on this topic has come from this part of the world.  This presentation will review the history and practical aspects of using behavioral evaluations in the setting of shelters in EU nations, and what that might mean for dogs in the USA.
